What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a traditional Oriental Medicine that has been around for over 2,000 years. It is one of the most enduring of ancient healing that has evolved into a sophisticated system. Acupuncture is the oldest and most commonly practiced medical system in the world and in some areas it is used as a primary health care system. People throughout history have been treated by acupuncture more than any other system of medicine. Thin, sterile needles are placed at specific points on the body to promote harmony, immunity, and overall functions of a person's health and to treat underlying imbalances. It is a drug-free treatment for a wide range of ailments.
At the core of this ancient medicine is the philosophy that Qi (pronounced “chee”), or circulating life energy, that flows throughout the body. It has specific pathways and provides nourishment to cells, organs, glands, tissues, muscles, and every aspect that is of the person and beyond. In addition, each major organ has specific energy channels running through the body. Acupuncture helps to restore balance and harmony of the circulating Qi as well as the body’s ability to heal itself. This life force, Qi, flows through the body in channels similar to rivers moving through the earth. Health is promoted when the qi in the body is sufficient and moving properly. Illness can begin when the qi is blocked, impeded, excessive, deficient, or otherwise out of balance. This is when we may experience dis-ease - in body, mind, spirit, as we are all at the same time.
